Message from Aaron A. Peace - President, Dignity Health Foundation - East Valley

Fall has been so busy - and it has barely begun!

If you have not yet joined in our capital campaign, it will take each and every person in our community to finish out the fundraising on our $5 million dollar goal to open the new expansion at Chandler Regional Medical Center. The emergency services and Trauma Center have already opened, and we continue to build out the Gila River Indian Community Lobby, as well as our service areas for patients and their families, such as a café and a place to worship. We are so thankful to every community member who has already donated! For a fun way to support the Trauma Center in the new building, join us on October 10th for a M*A*S*H fundraising gala - including a performance by Jamie Farr!

Mercy Gilbert Medical Center is in the middle of their fall employee giving campaign to support our rapidly expanding Orthopedics program. More than 400 employees have already committed and we look forward to even more joining in as they learn about the power of philanthropy. Mercy Gilbert continues to grow and will open a pediatric unit with Phoenix Children's Hospital the first of October - join me at the community celebration on Saturday, September 27 from 9 a.m. to noon (click here to learn more).

Speaking of our littlest patients - we have continued needs in the Women and Children's programs at both hospitals, including a need for comfortable chairs that allow patients or family members to sleep, rock or just spend time with the newest family members. Let us know if you would like to purchase these gilding recliners at $2,000 each or other items such as wireless telemetry monitoring to allow families in the southeast valley more birthing choices in our amazing family birthing centers. We are sure that many community groups and churches will join in this special project.

We plan to top $3.3 million dollars raised in FY15 - and more importantly, invest 100% of that back into our hospitals and outreach programs! Fall also begins the cycle of grants to the hospital - the sole mission of our Foundation. I hope you will find an opportunity that moves you to invest. Please donate online now.

Contact me to volunteer to support our mission or with any ideas you may have. You may also check out our website at www.supportdignityhealtheastvalley.org as it has up-to-date information on our past fiscal year and our new board members, as well as our exciting projects.

In Service,

Aaron A. Peace

Kudos to the Children's Dental Clinic Team!

The Children's Dental Clinic held one of the most successful grass-roots fundraising events here at Dignity Health. The Dignity Health Foundation East Valley partnered with the Dignity Health Children's Dental clinic to hold a prize drawing to raise funds for the clinic. Thanks to the volunteer efforts of the clinic's valuable Parent Committee and the clinic staff the prize drawing exceeded all expectations and $4710 was raised from $10 tickets. Four great prizes were donated by Kalil Bottling, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Arizona Cardinals. The majority of tickets were purchased by families who visit the clinic and were grateful for an opportunity to give back in return for the free dental services provided for their children. Many employees also purchased tickets to provide support for the clinic. The money raised will be invested directly back into the Clinic by a donation from the Foundation, the 501c3 fundraising arm of the hospitals and outreach programs. The staff and family volunteers plan to further improve the experience at the Clinic by purchasing much-needed equipment, along with a television and DVD player for the waiting room. The fundraising activity was successful not only for the huge monetary gain, it also created awareness and acted as a catalyst for our community to give back to the Clinic and to say thanks for the incredible services provided by this team.

Help Us ... Help Us!

The Mercy Gilbert Employee Giving campaign is underway this fall! It's been an exciting time as "Help Us...Help Us" is the mantra sweeping the floors. Ice cream rounding kicked-of the campaign, a luncheon was held to describe the giving campaign and thank everyone for the equipment purchased for Maternal Child Health last year. Champions volunteer to spread the word and almost 400 employees total are giving to the hospitals; 140 of whom are One Hour Club Members. These special givers annually donate one hour of pay or PTO per paycheck. They become One Hour Club members and enjoy social events, activities and special drawings with the Foundation. There is a fun weekly participation drawing using all donation forms turned in to encourage participation of any kind.

Employee gifts help buy much-needed items at our hospitals. Last year their donations purchased incubators and wireless telemetry equipment for our maternal-child health department, and this year their generosity will help to advance our orthopedics area.

Give the Gift of Comfort for New Parents

We want everyone to experience one of the most exciting times of their lives -- the delivery of their baby -- in comfortable surroundings. Dignity Health's Family Birthing Centers at both Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert Medical Centers offer a safe, family-centered environment, and we hope to exceed expectations by fulfilling educational, physical, psychological and cultural needs. Our team of birthing center doctors, midwives, nurse practitioners and specially trained labor and delivery nurses, postpartum care nurses, lactation consultants and nutritionists will guide families every step of the way.

You can be a part of this relaxing environment by providing a glider/recliner, such as the one pictured here. We hope to purchase 25 chairs for each hospital, allowing moms, dads and grandparents to bond with their new babies in comfort.

A gift of $2,000 will purchase that glider/recliner. A big thanks goes out to Junky Trunk Boutique of Gilbert for recognizing the importance of patient and family comfort, and for purchasing the first glider/recliner for the Mercy Gilbert family birthing center. Their gift, like yours, will be recognized with a plaque in the donor's name, as well as recognition in the Dignity Health Foundation newsletter.

Laughter is the Best Medicine | Friday, October 10

Get ready for another entertaining evening at the 11th Annual Laughter is the Best Medicine at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa on October 10th at 5pm. If you have never come to our annual gala, don't let another one pass you by. If you have been before, you know to expect an evening of side-stitching entertainment.

This year's Laughter will support the new Trauma Center at Chandler Regional Medical Center with a M*A*S*H theme - and a performance by Jamie Farr!

This annual event is our major fundraiser for the year, and helps us support community programs, life-saving medical equipment and capital expansion projects for Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert Medical Centers. The dollars raised each year at this even have a direct impact on patient care in the Southeast Valley, and make a real difference.

Laughter 2014 would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Thank you to the Arizona Cardinals, the Arizona Diamondbacks, Mercy Care, Premier Emergency Medical Specialists, Ocotillo Golf Resort and to Mediant Helathcare, Barrow Neurosurgical Associates and Wells Fargo Bank. Also a big thanks to Peggy Bauer of Cactus Mountain Realty for being our wine sponsor and to Panoramic Press for taking care of our printing needs for this event again this year. Nor would the gala be a success without the Dignity Health East Valley Volunteers. We thank them for their continued support of the annual gala both with sponsorship and the gift of their time.

This year's drawing, sponsored by Native Air, will feature a beautiful pendant donated by Barnes Fine Jewelers of Gilbert. Raffle tickets will be $100 each. Event tickets are still available for $250 each. For tickets and sponsorship opportunities, visit laughterformedicine.org or call us at 480.728.3931.

Planned Gifts Important and Impactful

Our hospitals are blessed to have many people who support our healing mission with their donations to our community outreach programs, capital needs, program needs and for medical teaching and research. Some of those people are especially generous and support the hospitals with a legacy gift... a gift in their will or estate plan. These gifts usually come from people who are most engaged with us through volunteerism, another form of service to the hospital or as a grateful past patient.

Even though they are infrequent, these gifts are often the largest we ever receive and are an important element in our fundraising inventory. They most often take the form of a bequest in a person's will or trust as an expression of their desire to leave a legacy after they are gone.

The Foundation's planned giving program includes stewardship of individuals who have already made a future planned gift, cultivation of donors likely to be interested in making a planned gift and marketing efforts to inform others of the possibility and resources to learn more about how to leave their legacy through a planned gift.

For more information about planned giving, please contact Alan Knobloch at alan.knobloch@dignityhealth.org or 480.728.3931.

Surprise Donation Brings Music to Mercy Gilbert

Recently an anonymous donor brought a grand piano to the lobby of Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. Volunteers and visitors alike have enjoyed sitting down to the keyboard, bringing music to the ears of those around them. A big thanks goes to this donor, as well as to Stillwell Piano of Tempe for donating tuning and maintenance services.
